Jesus as Son of Man Bible Study

John sees a vision of Jesus as son of man, in Revelation chapter 1:12-20, clothed with a long robe with a golden sash standing in the midst of seven golden lampstands. Jesus most often describes Himself as Son of Man, the one described in Daniel 7:13-14, who is given an eternal kingdom, the Messiah. Jesus was both fully human and fully God, God the Son and Jesus as Son of Man.

Revelation 1:12-16 English Standard Version
Vision of the Son of Man
12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.

John uses an allusion to Daniel 7:13-14 to identify Jesus as Son of Man that is given an eternal kingdom.

Daniel 7:13-14 English Standard Version
The Son of Man Is Given Dominion
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

Revelation 1:14-15 English Standard Version
14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.

In the above verses, John is identifying, Jesus as Son of Man, with Yahweh, the Ancient of Days, described in Daniel.

Daniel 7:9 English Standard Version
The Ancient of Days Reigns
9 “As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire.

In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus explained to His disciples what would take place at His second coming. Christ gives an illustration of what His second coming will be like. Jesus as Son of Man will return “as it was in the days of Noah”.

Matthew 24:37-41 English Standard Version
37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left.

When Christ describes himself as the Son of Man in the Old Testament, He is claiming He is the Messiah, the Christ that the Jewish nation had been longing and waiting for, to deliver them bondage and oppression from the powers of darkness and evil people and entities aligned with Satan.
