The Host of Heaven
Created Spiritual Being Members of the Assembly of God

The host of heaven are divine, supernatural creatures created by God to serve Him and do His bidding. Some of the heavenly hosts have continued to serve God, while others have rebelled. There are several terms used in the Scriptures to designate divine spiritual beings that make up the host of Heaven. In English translations, the most common New Testament occurrence is the term angel.  This English word derives from the Hebrew word “malak” or the Greek word “angelos”, both meaning messenger. There are, however, many more names and titles use to describe the host of Heaven.

Titles of the host of heaven in the Bible

open spiritual eyes

My favorite mental image, concerning the host of heaven, is Elisha praying that God would open the spiritual eyes of his fearful servant as he awoke and saw a powerful and overwhelming enemy army surrounding Jerusalem, set to attack.

2 Kings 6:15-17 ...ESV
15 When the servant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. And the servant said, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” 16 He said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

Ephesians 1:17-21 ...ESV
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

Angels

The New Testament lumps most spiritual members of the divine council as Angels, (malak) transliteration of Hebrew, (angelos), transliteration of Greek. The Bible depicts most of these divine supernatural creatures as working on behalf of Yahweh.

Psalm 103:20 …ESV
20 Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word!

There are also some angels(angelos – Greek) who have rebelled from Yahweh’s lordship and have joined forces with the devil or Satan in opposition to Yahweh.

Revelation 12:9 ... ESV
9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Sons of God (bene ha elohim)

Elohim in the Old Testament is used most often referring to the God Israel, Yahweh, however it is also used to refer to created spiritual beings. The term "elohim" is best viewed as denoting the primary residence of spiritual beings is heaven, the spiritual realm, as opposed to the physical realm, the earth and universe.

Yahweh is an elohim, but not all elohim are Yahweh, only Yahweh, the God of Israel, is God the Father. The Assembly of God, the Divine Council, after the fall and before Jesus' second coming,  includes God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit and all the other created elohim, spiritual beings. After Jesus returns and believers are glorified, those gloried believers will reign in heaven with Jesus Christ. The new heaven and earth, will be the new Eden, like the pre-fall Garden of Eden, where God, human beings and spiritual beings existed as one divine family, worshiping and loving God, and loving each other.

Job 1:6 …ESV                                                                                    6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.

Genesis 6:1-2 ...ESV
Increasing Corruption on Earth
6When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose.

Deuteronomy 32:8-9 ...ESV
8 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. 9 But the Lord's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage.

Psalm 82 ...ESV
Rescue the Weak and Needy
A Psalm of Asaph.
82 God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: 2 “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah 3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6 I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you; 7 nevertheless, like men you shall die, and fall like any prince.” 8 Arise, O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!

Psalm 82 is a great example of our earlier discussion on the ambiguous use of "elohim" in the old testament. Below you will see a screen shot of an interlinear version of a portion of Psalm 82. It shows clearly, how the same Hebrew transliteration, "elohim" is use to refer to God the Father, Yahweh, and also to the rebellious sons of god (elohim), that did not lead the descendants of Noah and his family to multiply and subdue the earth, but rather to stay in Shinar and "build a name for themselves", (Genesis chapter 11). There are several websites that offer a free interlinear version, and the Hebrew transliterations in the old testament will be familiar to those reading English versions of the Old Testament.  I encourage you to use them in your private Bible study.

God  has taken his place in the divine council ;
4 אֱֽלֹהִ֗ים ---→ → → 5 נִצָּבַּ--►- - אֵ֑ל  עֲדַת
ʾělō·hîm nṣb      ʾēl 5 -----------ʿē·ḏā(h) 1

in the midst of  the gods he  holds judgment :
9 ------בְּ → 10 קֶ֖רֶב → → 11 אֱלֹהִ֣ים → → 12 יִשְׁפֹּֽט
b -----qěʹ·rěḇ -----ʾělō·hîm-----         špt

Hopefully, you can see, how "God" and "gods" are both the "elohim" transliteration. I'm not a Hebrew or Greek, scholar, so if I've scrambled the interlinear version, I apologize, and ask your forgiveness.

Types or classes of the host of heaven

Holy Ones (qados)

Deuteronomy 33:2 …ESV
2 He said,“The Lord came from Sinai and dawned from Seir upon us;
he shone forth from Mount Paran; he came from the ten thousands of holy ones, with flaming fire at his right hand.

Cherub (kerub)

Genesis 3:24 …ESV
24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

Cherubim

Ezekiel 1:5-10 ESV
5 And from the midst of it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had a human likeness, 6 but each had four faces, and each of them had four wings. 7 Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the sole of a calf's foot. And they sparkled like burnished bronze. 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. And the four had their faces and their wings thus: 9 their wings touched one another. Each one of them went straight forward, without turning as they went. 10 As for the likeness of their faces, each had a human face. The four had the face of a lion on the right side, the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and the four had the face of an eagle.

Ezekiel 10:15 ...ESV
15 And the cherubim mounted up. These were the living creatures that I saw by the Chebar canal.

The four living creatures of Eze 1:5-10 and the cherubim of Eze 10:15 are the same.

Satan was a cherub, before he fell.

Ezekiel 28:13-17 ...ESV
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, sardius, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle; and crafted in gold were your settings
and your engravings. On the day that you were created they were prepared. 14 You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you. 16 In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned; so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God, and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you.

Seraph (sarap)

 Isaiah's purification Isa 6

Isaiah 6:2 …ESV
2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

Watcher (ir)

Daniel 4:13…ESV
13 “I saw in the visions of my head as I lay in bed, and behold, a watcher, a holy one, came down from heaven.

Archangel (archangelos)

archangel michael

1 Thessalonians 4:16 …ESV
16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

These "classes" typically denote some ranking within the spiritual beings of the host of heaven.  An example would be, archangel versus angel.

More terms used to refer to spiritual beings pending context

Prince (sar)

Daniel 10:13 …ESV
13 The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia,

Colossians 1:16 …ESV
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

Power (dynamis)

Ephesians 1:21 …ESV
21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
